CollectionDX - Tensou Sentai Goseiger http://www.iquantascores.com/taxonomy/term/1512/0 [G2:540260 class=g2image_centered] The Gosei Angels are beings who have secretly defended life on Earth for thousands of years, lead by Master Head. While human in appearance, they are usually not seen as they move among us. The road between Earth and Gosei World is Heaven’s Tower- a massive structure which hangs upside down from the clouds. Unfortunately, an empire of aliens, called Warstar, has chosen Earth as their next target, and they have destroyed the Heaven’s Tower in a preemptive strike! Now isolated on Earth, five Gosei Angels-in-training must learn to cooperate with each other, and bring the powers of their three tribes- Skick, Landick, & Seaick- together in order to defeat Warstar, as the Tensou Sentai Goseiger! en Mystic Brothers http://www.iquantascores.com/toy_review/2010/mystic_brothers

Toy Name (Short)

Mystic Brothers

Toy Number

Toy Review Summary

Cool toys are fun. So I decided to dig it out of the toybox and go for another review.

And… well…

This… is an ostrich. A green ostrich… with angry red eyes… a giant, partially-golden egg on top… and the ability to turn into a helicopter.

…

AWESOME!

The entire concept alone is just so ridiculous, and I love that so much about this guy as I invite all kinds of randomness with open arms.

Oh, and his mouth opens.

The Egg Headder is simple enough.

It splits in half to reveal Headder ports and some tabs, but that’s about it. Unlike every other Headder in the line, it doesn’t actually connect to the Mystic Runner (the ostrich), but rather it uses these four narrow pieces to grasp the Headder port.

For the most part it’s kinda bland, and if it hadn’t been packaged with something as insanely hilarious as the Mystic Runner I would’ve been turned off by it.

The set comes with one Gosei Card for the Mystic Brothers (Speaking of which, I can now understand Katakana, so I can read the card! Yay!)

I love the back of the card because it has the five core ranger colors with the Goseiger symbol in the middle.

I don’t have Gosei Great (and I really want him!), so I can’t show you Mystic Gosei Great. However, I can still show you the superior combination since I have Datas Hyper!

MYSTIC DATAS HYPER!

This… just- just LOOK AT IT! It’s a boxing robot with egg gloves that double as machine guns, plus a giant cone hat that doubles as a propeller! The sheer ridiculousness makes it one of my favorite Sentai mecha of all time.

Datas gains a bit more height this way. He’s even taller than GokaiOh, one of the largest main Sentai robos.

I don’t have any more Goseiger toys (shame!), but I’m pretty sure the Mystic Brothers can provide the sprinkle of insanity that any custom Goseiger combination needs. If you have Datas or any of the Goseiger toys and can find a good price for him, Mystic Brothers is a must-have! Obviously Mystic Datas cannot compete against the tough competition of “cool-looking robots” (especially prominent this year- look at the combiners we’ve been getting all across Asia! Ninninger, Biklonz, Giant Saver… it’s a combiner fan’s paradise!), so it decides to go a different route, pulling off an interesting and utterly absurd look that cannot be rivaled.

Well, until…

Scale

Char. When united with a robotic body, they become mecha known as Gosei Machines. The Goseiger each have access to one default Headder, representative of their tribes, but when needed, the Gosei Machines can combine into gigantic humanoid warriors to fight the minions of Warstar.”

DX Datas Hyper appears courtesy of HobbyLink Japan

Sounds pretty epic right? He’s modeled after a Cardass machine, a series of video game machines in Japan. These machines are activated with playing cards that are included with each toy in the Goseiger series. The player slips their card into the machine to begin playing the game with that character. This particular machine is the “Super Sentai Battle: Dice-O” game.

In Cardass mode, you can turn on the switch in front and he makes a noise when activated. Turn the dial on the front to hear an assortment of phrases from the character, none of which I understand.

The display is simulated by sliding one of the Data Cards into the slot on the left. While human in appearance, they are usually not seen as they move among us. The road between Earth and Gosei World is Heaven’s Tower- a massive structure which hangs upside down from the clouds. Unfortunately, an empire of aliens, called Warstar, chose Earth as their next target, and destroyed Heaven’s Tower in a preemptive strike! Though isolated on Earth, Gosei Angels-in-training Alata, Eri, Agri, Moune, Hyde, and their robotic assistant Datas have successfully defeated Warstar and drove them back into outer space. But they have little time to rest as a new enemy returns to power from deep within the Earth itself, called the Yuumajuu. They now seek to destroy all humans to turn the Earth into a poisoned wasteland for themselves. Fight on, Tensou Sentai Goseiger! In Epic 17- “A New Enemy, Yuumajuu!”, the five Gosei Angels on Earth are not quite at ease despite finally successfully fending off Warstar’s advances. As celebrities and political figures across Japan are targeted by a mysterious force and melted to death, they realize a new threat has appeared from deep within the bowls of Earth. Called the Yuumajuu, they have grown more powerful than their last encounter with the Gosei Angels thousands of years previously thanks to humans weakening the Earth with pollution. The Goseiger are quickly overwhelmed by the Yuumajuu, but then suddenly another armored figure appears, calling himself Gosei Knight. The newcomer quickly defeats the monster while the two Yuumajuu leaders retreat. While the human victims are recovered, the monster comes back as a giant worm-like tank. Wielding the power of the Landick, Seaick, and Skick powers one at a time, Uobouzu is severely weakened enough so that Ground Gosei Great can use the Ground Gosei Strike finisher to destroy him once and for all. Because Ground Gosei Great utilizes the power of the three Gosei tribes, it can wield them individually by swapping the Manta, Kuwaga, and Taka Headers at the end of its staff. (It should be noted that having Kuwaga Header at the end of its staff is the default set-up for Ground Gosei Great.)

This marks the second time in Super Sentai where a DX toy has included a human-scaled, poseable character who became part of a DX toy’s combination. The first time was in 2005 when the villain Madou Kishi Wolzard was featured in the DX Majuu Gattai WolKaiser in “Mahou Sentai MagiRanger” However, Wolzard did not change his form did not change when he merged with his steed. Gosei Knight, on the other hand, was originally the Groundion Header who was then granted the power to shrink down and become humanoid. That being said, the toy version of Gosei Knight here is awfully bulky in his body, with spindly legs and, oh yeah, a giant hole in his back. The Wolzard figure also had better articulation and proportions. That Groundion Header transformation is uninspired, with a lot of limbs simply twisting about to get where it needs to go, and leaving a lot of unanswered gaps behind. (I mean, it looks like he has muttonchops and devil horns in Header form!) The Skyion and Sealion Headers are the worst yet- they have no movement whatsoever. Boooo! I think Gosei Groundion brings a bit of mass and presence to an otherwise forgettable line-up of component mecha thusfar. I mean, twelve wheels!? Aweseome. But the fun stops there, as it ends up being nothing more than a parts-former with more unnecessary gaps. I mean, are those supposed to be non-functional wings on his back? For all his bulk, like all the other Gosei Machines to this point, Gosei Groundion doesn’t resemble at all the heavy dump truck it’s supposed to represent; it’s hardly worth even mentioning except for the fact it’s seen in the show! Maybe if the two Knightick Brothers- Skyion and Sealion had been able to snap onto his back to form some kind of smallish carrier, I wouldn’t have protested as much. Speaking of the Knightick Brothers, they too do not look like their namesakes (a blimp and cruise liner), and are just as functionless as the Gosei Machines in the DX Gosei Great. (Oh, by the way, what is a “sky lion”? Lions and sea lions, I get, but a sky-based lion? What’s that supposed to look like???) To be fair, I like this combo above the Gosei Great only because it has more of that traditional bulky Super Sentai robo-look. This makes it slightly more appealing, but considering what it took to get it there- a lot of parts-swapping and single-step transformations, with an ugly-as-hell head- I don’t think it’s worth it. The arms have no articulation even though they had plenty of space for elbows, wrists, & extra shoulder axis, and legs could also have benefitted from more articulation as well. Besides, there’s so much mass above the shoulder joint that it’s hard to determine if he’s holding his arms above or below them! And what the hell are those projections along the upper arms for!? Couldn’t they have found a way to retract those more??? Considering their purpose for the super-combo, they’re s***-useless either way. The super-combo is just an extension of themes- mainly block- and parts-forming to the max. And- my God!- we don’t even get a brand new & different head for the combo; just a slightly altered version of the Groundion Header. It all just serves to compound all the issues I have with the Gosei Machines into one giant robo. The only- let me say again, only- part about this combo I liked is that PLEX had the courtesy to hide the Gosei Great’s torso shoulder joint knobs with some panels from Gosei Groundion. I suppose I should also be thankful on some level that I didn’t have to spend $80+ on three-to-four accessory mecha in order to make this super-combo. For that, we can swap out one Header on the end of the… “staff” from one of the Tensou Gattai Series sets. (This, by the way, is the only other reason I even got the Skick Brother Set to begin with: so that I could demonstrate the staff-swapping feature for you here.) I tell ya- I’m getting closer to my breaking point here. Even though I don’t pay full price for these samplers because I’m a reviewer for CollectionDX, as a long-time fan the frustration just keeps building and building and building, and I just wish the Gosei Machine line would go away. PLEASE, go away! You’re making me sick! And so, the DX Tensou Gattai Gosei Ground adds nothing to an already confused and boring toyline. Not recommended.

Scale

Char. That being said, when I was first aware of the Tensou Gattai Series sets, they were fuzzy pictures because they had not been released yet. When I got to see the first of them in detail- Tensou Gattai Series 01- Seaick Brothers Set- I could not stop laughing. It was so… bad that it was funny! Tensou Gattai Series 02- Landick Brothers Set fared no better, though I didn’t laugh as hard; I just cringed, shook my head, and sighed. I’ll jump ahead a little and say the other accessory sets in the line- Tensou Gattai Series 04- Exotic Brothers Set (just four repaints of the Dragon Header, which appeared in only one episode early on), and Tensou Gattai Series 05- Mystic Brothers Set- are not appealing to me either. The only reasons I got this set was because I needed a representation of one of the accessory sets to demonstrate on CollectionDX (admittedly, a bad habit I’ve picked up); and it was the only one of the five that I found somewhat tolerable. The distinct difference between these Headers and the ones on the DX Gosei Great is that each one actually does something, even though they have no bodies individually. Otherwise, this is just another opportunity to fill your shelves with anonymous animal-mecha heads. Be careful in rolling these Headers around, though, as they don’t balance very well on their wheels and are rather top-heavy. You can take what you wish from attaching each one to the Gosei Blaster (although, in my opinion, admittedly they look better than any other Headers when this is done), But all that they do for Skick Gosei Great is create a new larger helmet and some smallish over-the-shoulder cannons. (They didn’t even bother trying to hide the combo’s face underneath Taka, which really pissed me off-!) Assuming that you’ve got a DX Gosei Great, and then enjoy the Header-swapping gimmick, then the Tensou Gattai Series 03- Skick Brothers Set may not be too bad an addition.

Scale

Char. Now isolated on Earth, five Gosei Angels-in-training must learn to cooperate with each other, and bring the powers of their three tribes, Skick, Landick, and Seaick, together in order to defeat Warstar, as the Tensou Sentai Goseiger! Headders are life-forms that appear as the flying heads of animals. When united with a robotic body, they become mecha known as Gosei Machines. The Goseiger each have access to one default Headder, representative of their tribes, but when needed, the Gosei Machines can combine into gigantic humanoid warriors to fight the minions of Warstar. When not in use, all Headders reside in a stone-like statue form on Headder Island.

The five primary Headders used by the Goseiger are the:

Dragon Headder (Of the Selection of materials. Structural integrity. Flexibility of joints and connection points. These are all things that you never hear about from me. Why? Because they are always done well for a Super Sentai DX robo toy. These are reliable standards which (almost) never falter. Frustratingly, these are the only good things about this toy. There is so much that is bad with this toy and the thirty-five year legacy it has behind it that I don’t even know where to start! Surely in my video I will bash the hell out of it for a good 10-20min (as I usually do), but here it would take up way too much space. So I shall narrow down to just the most irritating… if I can even categorize it that way. We did the whole animal-heads-on-vehicle-bodies mecha for a whole year in 2008 with “Engine Sentai Go-Onger”. It was very puzzling, and had no appeal beyond that one year. (Some liked it, some didn’t. All agreed that they were light-hearted enough to not take them seriously.) So, why are we doing this again? Really, if you don’t watch the show (I certainly don’t, except for episodes specifically related to these reviews), you wouldn’t know they were. With Gosei Snake you get little green windows and articulation(!), but all of the others fall flat on their faces. Why did they even bother in the show??? (That’s a phoenix? Really? How so, exactly?) Other than little MADmobile-like pods that double as ventral fins, Gosei Shark is by far the most malformed and misshapen of the bunch. Transformations are exceedingly simple… which, if you regularly follow my reviews, you know I get bored with very quickly. The most complex you get is Gosei Snake, which just requires a bit of twisting until it snaps in place and that’s it. Since I don’t count folding away landing gear on flying or floating mecha, Gosei Phoenix, Gosei Shark, and Gosei Tiger all take exactly one step before combining with the others. Gosei Dragon is the worst offender, though, because the majority of it is parts-swapping, which I also hate. The only “transformation” involves rotating the robo head around and flipping up those puny-ass angel-wings-for-ears. (Are you telling me that, for all the articulation-less heads we’ve had throughout the years, those ears couldn’t have been designed to be molded in?) I will tell you something funny now… It’s always fun for me to be able to open up a brand new toy and try to figure out how it works and transforms while referencing the instructions as little as possible. Unless there are hidden switches, I usually get them right. For this toy, I never opened the instructions. Not once. I didn’t even glance at them. That is a sad trend that is increasingly frequent with Super Sentai as the years go by. The combined form is no better. The feet are enormous, the Dragon Headder makes the chest stick out way too much (just like the robos in 2003’s “Bakuryuu Sentai AbaRanger” did), those wings are very awkward appearing above the arms (as opposed to behind them, as traditionally happens), and that giant Dragon Sword hangs equally-awkwardly off the back. (Is that really a sword, by the way? Actually, I don’t know what the hell to compare it to; it simply is, and that’s just not good enough.) Also, usually the first lead Super Sentai robo couldn’t fly unless an upgrade occurred later on, but here it’s a built-in feature. (Yawn!) The limb-swap era which began in 2003 has spelled a major shift is the design of Super Sentai mecha, focusing on having to buy multiple accessory mecha that incorporate a special gimmick of their own, and forcing increasingly-simplified designs into the rest of the line. (I don’t count the Power Animals from 2001’s “Hyakujuu Sentai GaoRanger” as part of that since it was cool then, and they were far from being simple toys!) The more complex transformations, details, and aura of past designs have been washed aside in favor of making more and more toys per season in the name of profits (and yet always under the guise of expenses in manufacturing and marketing). In general, if the arms of the first hero combining robo, such as this one, can separate at the shoulder in order to combine, then chances are it will be a limb-swap series. (There have been two years of exception, but those were years of dread and impending doom, I remind you.) So, in addition to the theory that limb-swapping may be used again in 2010 (oh, come on!), there is a new gimmick which has surfaced: the Headders. How is it, I ask you, that Bandai and PLEX felt that removing the heads of animal mecha would make for a good gimmick? I can understand customizing the Gosei Blaster in regards to role-playing by swapping out the five main Headders on the barrel. (Matter o’ fact, I kind of like that part.) What has me worried sick is all the extra Headder mounting points on this toy… of which, not counting the three on the Dragon Sword, nine have yet to be used! You would think that the Headders on the five Gosei Machines here would have unique mounting points, but no, they too utilized the same points, bring the grand total for just this one toy up to 17! Subtle, this gimmick will not be. So, again, how is swapping the heads of animal-mecha a good thing??? Oh, and by the way, I thought this was going to be the year that Super Sentai used trading cards as its primary cross-pollinating gimmick for the series? So, you’re telling me, Bandai and PLEX, that we now have two collecting gimmicks to keep track of in one series??? What, in the name of Hell, is going on over there!!? I realized that, as I was typing this review up (and no doubt when I shoot the video) I was getting anxious; a frustration and impatience the likes of which has been building ever since 2003 but has remained unanswered. I believe that I am reaching a limit of patience. One of my favorite franchises ever has tumbled carelessly down a road which it cannot seem to escape from. I fear that, sometime in the future, I may have to walk away from it. The loss of any childhood enchantment and fantasy is often crushingly sudden. Though this probably sounds overly dramatic and pathetic, I think the DX Tensou Gattai Gosei Great may spell the beginning of the end of this particular one, and there may be nothing I can do to stop it.

[NOTE: Video was re-uploaded in 2014 to remove copyrighted material.]

Scale

Char. Also dependent on this is that one of three tribe-specific blasting sounds will play when the trigger is squeezed. For example: the toy does not differ between, say, the Snake and Tiger Headders since they’re both Landick-oriented, but it will between those and the Seaick-oriented Shark Headder. (Sometimes, in later years, it was a bladed weapon instead of a gun.) For the earlier years, the toy sidearm was a simple light-and-sound blaster with no movement on it. After a little while, the sidearm was capable of transforming into a dagger or short sword to allow for melee combat beyond their personalized weapon. While certainly not a throwback, and despite the swapping Headder gimmick (what is up with that anyways???), this toy carries on that tradition of a non-transforming blaster. It has a Turn On sound, and a blasting sound. So, unless you attach a Headder, that’s all you’ll ever get out of it. Considering most all of the Goseiger’s personal weapons are swords, axes, etc., I don’t mind that. It’s a nice change. When I first opened the box and actually had it in my hand, the word that popped into my mind, devoid of any sarcasm, was “cute”. It’s small, but fits just about perfectly into an adult’s hand, and the lack of a real barrel gives it a pudgy appearance. If I may be finicky for a moment, I don’t think that amidst all the technological marvels and magic of the Goseiger’s arsenal, this particular weapon fits the theme of their style. I have come up with two possible scenarios, both of which could easily apply here. It actually strikes me as more reminiscent of the steampunk or retro-futurism genres: a ribbed pre-fire chamber, extra pistons, gold or brass highlights, visible screws and bolts, wide muzzle with short barrel, curved grip, and even simply its size; if it had a brown wooden grip, that may have further sold my point. I mean, without a Headder attached, it looks like a friggin’ ray gun! It doesn’t have nearly as many of the sharpened edges or boxy format which is the standard of Super Sentai. I can turn the On/Off dial with my thumb. For that matter, the On/Off switch isn’t a switch, but rather a giant rotating dial which is seamlessly integrated into the style of the weapon. Awesome! I also really like how the pre-fire chamber has a yellow-gold hue to it when the light and sound is not active, but then turns red when fired. Also very nice. I remember in 2006’s “Gougou Sentai Boukenger”, the Bouken Weapon Survi-Buster had the separately sold Scope Shot accessory, which could attach to the side as a sniper’s scope (among its various other functions), but the only thing the toy couldn’t do was let you look through it! I think that was the first time a targeting scope was ever used on a Super Sentai weapon of any kind… until now. Plus, the scope folds down so you don’t even know it’s there, and there’s two reticules inside it that you can line-up for a straight shot! I really liked that. Having the Headders attach simply makes it customizable so you can become whatever Goseiger you prefer. Meh. There is only one item I can think of to complain about, and that is that the pre-fire chamber only lights up on one side; the right side is painted over. Why!? Is PLEX biased towards the left side to carry the glamour of their toys or something? I don’t buy Super Sentai role-playing toys unless they’re special or stand-out in some way, because I tend to get just the DX-sized mecha. The Gosei Blaster is definitely a winner, and I recommend getting it!

This document has been composed with the online instant web content editor which can be found at htmleditor.tools

Scale

1:1

Char. For example, while each Goseiger has the same Combine Card for the Tensou Gattai Gosei Great giant robo, their Change Cards look and function the same, but are customized to the individual. Just about every single toy in the “Tensou Sentai Goseiger” series has a minimum of one Gosei Card, so no two are duplicated. To get you started on your collection of Gosei Cards, five are provided here, mostly focused on Gosei Red. Along the back of each Gosei Card is a category, explaining the function of the card. The Tensouder will announce the category before speaking the name of the specific card. (The category of any Gosei Card can be found along the back of the card.) This gimmick extends beyond the toy line, however … Across Japan, the Super Sentai Battle: Dice-O game has been created. In addition to encouraging simply collecting the Gosei Cards for tabletop games between two or more players (hence the extra numbered stats across the bottom of the Gosei Cards, which have no function in the TV series), all Gosei Cards can be taken to real video arcades, and inserted into specially-designed gaming machines. Using the barcode atop each Gosei Card, the game machine recognizes each card uniquely and will affect the action on the screen! While cards began being distributed in late 2008 (during the run of “Engine Sentai Go-Onger”), they could not be used until 2010. To promote the arcade experience further, the “Goseiger” character Datas was specifically designed to resemble the real arcade machines when in his Standby Mode (and can also read a few Gosei Cards as well)! By itself, using cards to convey special techniques and summon fantastic creatures has become a standard in Japan game play; “Pokémon” and “Yu-Gi-Oh” just to name some of the more popular ones that have migrated successfully to the United States. I find no problem with this, even though I’ve never wanted any cards. (Well… that’s not entirely true- I do want just a few from 2004’s “Kamen Rider Blade”.) While I believe that it was about time that Super Sentai broke into the card-playing arena (no pun intended), I don’t think that this was as successful a debut as it could have had, and that’s mainly because of the other gimmick included in “Tensou Sentai Goseiger”: head-swapping mecha. Having one collecting gimmick is challenging enough, because you have to force yourself into getting sets that you don’t really want in order to get the collectible item that you do, but to have two in the same series, which have no real relation to each other? (Oh, by the way- what kind of effed -up gimmick is swapping robotic animal heads anyways???) Go one way or the other, PLEX, but don’t go both ways at the same time because they’ll detract from each other! Not to compare Super Sentai to another franchise made by the same companies too much, but the thing I liked about “Kamen Rider Blade” (aside from the TV series as a whole) is that each Undead suite card could be used in conjuncture with another to make unique character-signature attacks, and the card-reading device for each Kamen Rider was different, even if how they were used was the same. (By the way, I would like to get only the Garren Rouser for just that reason…) Each Undead card was unique, and no two were similar, except perhaps in the cards used for henshin (if I remember correctly, those were all Two of [Suite] for each Rider). There are already dozens of Gosei Cards, and most of them do exactly the same thing while simply looking different. For example: if you put any of the five Change cards into this toy, they all produce the same sound. Also, they’re really picking this summoning thing to death- not only are their cards to summon the Gosei Machine mecha, but also for the Headders that make up those mecha as well! (So far as I know, every ”Goseiger” toy has a minimum of two Gosei Cards. By the end of summer alone, I wouldn’t be surprised if we passed 52 cards.) I mean, talk about overkill…! While I was not planning to get this toy, it is somewhat required if you want to know what all those Gosei Cards sound like (without watching the show). If you’re interested in collecting Gosei Cards, then you probably need this set just to get those five cards. For the most part, it’s not a bad toy by itself. I like how the eyes change when the mouth is opened and closed. The voice heard is not only the same one from in the show, but it’s the voice of Master Head and the series’ narrator (Ikuya Sawaki). I have no real complaints, other than that the volume is a hair too high… again (though not as bad as on the Souken Gasshin Geki Sabers from 2007’s “Jyuken Sentai GekiRanger”), and there isn’t any audible/visual warning to let you know the toy’s power is still on. Why is it that when you open the mouth, it always says “Gotcha!”? (I suppose it’s better than a consistent ringing or beeping, which has been known to get really irritating in the past… but why that word?) Also, mark my words: the bottom of all these Gosei Cards are going to get bent and torn up really fast the more you run them past that little clip inside. Nice to have the clip, but I wish it wasn’t quite as tight as it is now. The one thing I’d like to know is just how the toy reads these cards to begin with! The barcode atop is clearly meant for the arcade machine’s laser scanner, but such a device would be prohibitively expensive for a toy. The cards aren’t notched, or have holes punched in them. I even ran them under a blacklight and found no special markings. I must confess, I’m impressed that they were able to do that! The only reason I got the Gosei Power Kaihoki Tensouder is because I could scan the cards in my video reviews to demonstrate them for you- the readers and watchers of CollectionDX.com and YouTube (which is becoming an expensive-if-necessary habit). It’s good at what it does, but if the card-collecting gimmick for the whole series had been a little better thought out, I might have appreciated it more. Two out of five stars.

Scale

1:1

Char.
