The big difference is that the Tomica line was almost exclusively dedicated to Japanese cars. While you will occasionally see Japanese cars in the Matchbox or Hot Wheels lines, they are largely American or European cars. And yes, these American diecast cars were definitely imported to Japan, but Tomica was (and is) a big success in Japan because it focused on domestic Japanese cars. In recent years, post-merger TakaraTomy has introduced Dream Tomica, renditions of cars from fictional stories in traditional tiny diecast car format.

Please check out my video review!

The NERV Official Business Coupe comes from the "Rebuild of Evangelion" theatrical film series based on the Neon Genesis Evangelion animated TV series. This car is based on the Mazda Cosmo sports car series that began in the '60s.

It almost entirely painted a creamy white with a brilliant red racing stripe. There are tamp-printed NERV logos on the doors and there's a tampo printed Cosmo signature logo on the hood near the Mazda insignia. The bumpers are bare diecast metal, NOT vacuum metallized plastic and the headlights and tail lights are painted. I appreciate the detail.

The hub caps on the all plastic wheels are indeed vacuum metallized. The interior is simple but has two seats and a steering wheel molded in black plastic. Both doors open and close and have simple lines to indicate interior and exterior door handles molded into the metal. Similarly, lines are molded into the metal to indicate the trunk and hood, but neither of them open. Unlike many modern day Hot Wheels, the bottom of the toy is also diecast metal.

This toy may not be flashy and it may not be futuristic, but it is a really nice little toy car. My only minor complaint is that the wheels are just thin plastic, but that's par for the course. If you are a Hot Wheels or Matchbox collector or have a child into playing with Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars, this will be right up your alley. It's inexpensive and the Evangelion theme is nice for fans of that series. True, this car did not show up a lot in the films and doesn't have the notoriety of the Batmobile, the Mach Five, or other famous fictional cars, but I'm sure it will look great with a big giant Eva toy like the Mega Sofubi Advance Evangelion Unit 1.

(C) 2015 Jeremy W. This is a beautiful figure that does a fantastic job of capturing the look and feel of the mecha in the movies. The details are sharp, the paint is flawless, and the use of different materials is well thought out. Medicom has delivered a premium experience that I can find few flaws with.

Articulation is the big draw for this figure, and it does not disappoint. A wide range of joints coupled with the complex construction of armor parts over an inner body combine for outstanding flexibility. If Eva-01 did it in the show, Medicom's figure can do it.

Starting at the top, the head is on a double ball-jointed neck with a soft vinyl covering that allows for seamless flexibility. The neck covering does not hinder motion and really adds to the look of this prominent area.

The mouth opens by first pulling down the jaw and then using the hinge to decide how chompy Eva-01 is feeling. The paint and detail here are gorgeous and the jaw is snug enough to hold poses.

The neck can look up and side to side, but it can also look straight down. Not an essential motion, but useful for displaying the Eva deactivated. While we're on the head I'll mention that the horn is made from slightly springy plastic. It feels sturdy, but is quite thin so it is still not going to survive a shelf dive.

The shoulders are covered by the cloth bodysuit up to the purple shoulder guard. The binders are attached to the torso directly with small ball joints so they do not hinder shoulder articulation at all.

The purple parts of the shoulder are hard plastic, and then the black is a soft vinyl sleeve over sturdy feeling joints. The arm sleeves have a great feel and I am not too worried about them tearing. There is some bunching when bending the elbow to a tight angle, but it has not left any real creases so far. Time will tell how durable the seamless areas are, but out of the box they feel pretty great.

The hands feature nice big wrist joints with sturdy split pegs that slip into the hard plastic inner forearm. Each hand has its own wrist peg, unlike having to keep track of lots of hands and a few wrist pegs like on a Hot Toys style figure.

The body and legs are covered in the same black cloth bodysuit that extends all the way down to the ankles. The stitching on the suit looks clean and the material has a bit of a plasticy feel to it that seems plenty durable. There is a note in the instructions showing how the hip is constructed to have a pull-down joint for added motion like on an SH Figuarts figure. The hip parts are shown to be all screwed together and feel very sturdy. The joints are nice and tight and have no problem supporting the figure.

The knees are also covered by the bodysuit, but my figure has a minor issue with the left knee. The suit has ridden up a bit under the lower leg armor, so it is bunched up around the knee.

Removing the foot reveals how the suit and leg armor work. I will have to put a dot of glue around the ankle to hold the suit in place nice and snug so the leg armor does not catch and pull it up around the knee anymore. Little touches like this remind me of a Henshin Cyborg suit than a hardcore licensed figure, when toy construction was a little bit simpler.

The ankles have excellent motion. They swivel, tilt, have rockers, and have great toe joints. The green ankle guard is made from squishy plastic and on a ball joint so it does not get in the way at all.

The toe joint is excellent. Enough of the foot stays flat on the ground to be nice and stable while looking great.

The layered construction and thoughtful engineering of Eva-01 allow it to do all sorts of poses. It can even do the runner's start from the episode where Shinki and the other children have to catch an angel as it falls to Earth.

The one real gimmick feature is the entry plug area. A special notice in the box informs the you that you must grab the rear hatch by its rear so as not to stress the slider that it is attached to. Once the rear hatch is disengaged, the cover for the entry port itself can be flipped up, revealing the entry port. The rear cover is a bit fiddly, and I am not crazy about the way the entry plugs work.

There are three entry plugs included for display in various states of insertion. The first is a full plug that only just sits in the port, showing the plug in position for pilot entry to the plug before insertion. The entry plug itself has great detail with recessed panel lines and sharp painting. The issue here is that the plug does not lock into place or anything, so it does not sit quite as straight as it should.

Next up is a half plug for mid-insertion. The effect is alright, but again the plug does not sit straight in the port.

Last is a small nub that allows just the tip of the entry plug to show for when the plug is fully inserted. The hatch can be closed with this plug in place, and the plug is secured by the hatch so it should not get lost. The looseness of the plugs and the way the hatch is supposed to help pull the plugs out all combine for a lackluster experience that does not seem quite right. Either I am missing something or this area was just kind of half-baked.

What is done nicely, however, is the umbilical cable. The actual cable is a solid rubber cord that is soft and supple, but does not have any wire for support or dynamic posing. The umbilical plug itself has three pegs that fit snugly in the port on the back of the Eva.

The fit is good, the plug is nice and secure, and the parts look great. It takes advantage of the high detail and incredible articulation afforded by a 1/6 scale style of construction on a large figure that allows for even more detail and more movement. There are other figures that do some of the gimmicks of the design better, such as the removable armor of the SoulSPEC release or the stylized sense of movement of the Revoltech releases. For a pure, unadulterated well-made action figure experience that comes with only the essentials, this new RAH Eva hits all the right notes. Aside from one or two minor wobbles with the entry plug and knee cover, the figure is perfect. All of the joints are nice and tight, the fit of the armor on the body is excellent, and the end result is superb. Unit-02 is available for preorder now, and I noticed today that Medicom has put up a listing for the berserk mode Unit-01 on their site. Stationed at the joint European/Russian-operated Bethany Base in the ocean above the Arctic Circle, Unit-05 was activated for the first time when the Third Angel scientific specimen breached its deep-freeze containment and attempted to escape the research facility. The full name of this EVA Unit implies that its construction was somehow rushed or incomplete, hence its dramatically untraditional appearance compared to other Units. The arms and legs are fully mechanical, but the torso and head retain the life-sustaining organs of the Evangelion Unit and space for the modified Entry Plug cockpit/escape pod. Additionally, controlling Unit-05 is different, requiring the use of both a modified Plug Suit and a closed-visor helmet to be worn by the Pilot Candidate. Because of a ‘forced synchronization’, the sensation of being mentally connected to the EVA is more raw and unfiltered than normal; additionally implying Unit-05’s rush into active duty.
Unit-05 derives its power not from an umbilical cable attached to its spine, but rather by a pair of eject-able pantographs attached to its utility wings, which drag along dual electrical rails on the ceiling of the tunnels inside Bethany Base. Like all other EVA Units, though, when disconnected from its main external power source, it automatically switches to its back-up battery, providing only five more minutes of activation. An additional feature is a cluster of rocket motors at the base of the four legs, which provide a short-range jumping ability.
The only weapon Unit-05 is seen using is a drill-like jousting spear, which can be detached from the two-finger right claw.

In her first confrontation against an Angel (and indeed, first live synchronization with an Evangelion), 14-year old pilot Mari Illustrious Makinami enthusiastically charged at the Third Angel, but was roughly pushed aside. The Angel then proceeded to cut its way out of Bethany Base and into open sky. In a last ditch effort, Mari impaled the Angel, pinning it by its neck to one of the giant pillars surrounding the rooftop with Unit-05’s spear. The pinned-up Angel tried to retaliate by cutting the EVA’s four legs off, but Mari used both of the EVA’s pincer claws to crush the Angel’s core (located inside its skull). Seconds later Unit-05 and the Third Angel exploded, vaporizing both, but Mari escaped unharmed but exhilarated.
It is discreetly implied, however, that perhaps Unit-05’s self-destruct program had been intentionally and covertly activated to cover up something, rather than to simply ensure the Angel’s destruction…

Kaiyodo’s Evangelion Evolution line (or EVA EVO for short) is a new version of the giant cyborgs featured in the Rebuild of Evangelion feature film quadrilogy. Starting with the particular Evangelion Units seen in “Evangelion: 2.0- You Can (Not) Advance”, they are a completely new remold from all of Kaiyodo’s past representations of them. Whereas past Rebuild EVA sets were based on in-production material provided by the animation studio making the film(s), Studio Khara, the EVA EVO line now provides updated and fully screen-accurate sculpts, paint applications, and accessories despite being not even two years distant from Kaiyodo’s respective 2007 and 2009 releases. (Most collectors think it’s actually just Kaiyodo’s staff looking for another excuse to make more Evangelion figures since they love the show so much… and honestly, who could blame them?)
A selling point of the EVA EVO line is that each release contains a unique diorama- a snap-shot moment taken directly from a scene in the Rebuild movies that featured that EVA Unit prominently interacting with an Angel. As a result of this, all of the EVA’s accessories have been restricted to what has been seen in just this moment of the film, rather than providing everything that has been seen on-screen. [So some features and weapons are not present even though they may have been used in the movie(s).]

(Un)fortunately for us, Unit-05 will only ever appear in one scene in one movie, so we’ll always get everything here regardless!

The only articulation that doesn’t have an associated Revolver Joint with it is in the four knees (which are single-axis-only friction joints), and the ball joints inside the utility wings on the shoulders.

Accessories

Okay, starting from the top and working down…

The pantographs need to be attached, and are on the smallest 2mm Revolver Joints. (Just don’t forget which one is in there- the replacement piece can’t move!) To keep the spear sturdy, there is a small peg on the right elbow that the back of the weapon can slip onto. The caterpillar tread-like wheels can turn, though they’re meant more for posing. The motion blur wheels actually allow the figure to roll a little depending on how tightly you push in those olive-green hubcaps.

Oh, look- accessory storage. A clear display stand is included with a detachable extension arm, and it can be used to help in posing Unit-05, but the display stand is primarily used to elevate the Angel diorama off the ground (since the Angel’s head was above Unit-05 in the scene), and then the Unit-05 figure will balance between that and its own legs.

Be advised: it is impossible to suspend Unit-05 from just the diorama; it cannot possibly hold that kind of weight!
(In case you’re confused: Unit-05 was actually standing on the Angel’s body during this confrontation, not dangling from the spear. After the Angel cut off its legs, then Unit-05 suspended itself in place by grabbing with both pairs of claws on the Angel’s core.)

While not my first Revoltech figure ever (that distinction belongs to 017- Shin Getter 3, another multi-legged mecha, by the way, which I know absolutely nothing about but looked cool enough to buy just on appearances), my first Revoltech Evangelion figure, and only one, to this point, was the winged 026- Evangelion Mass Production Type (which ironically shares the numbered designation of “Unit-05”; I’ll spare you the details). So, I kind of knew the score going in when I ordered this sampler. Obviously the leg and arm arrangements would be different, but that doesn’t really enter into the equation here. The point is, I knew how to pose a Revoltech EVA Unit, and knew I would be getting a good deal.
At the same store where I got Shin Getter 3 and my other three Revoltechs (which I recently learned went out of business), I got to handle a floor display Revoltech of my namesake, though it was broken before I saw it. It taught me how fragile and delicate these then-new Revoltech figures were. I considered myself warned.

Now, I must point out a rather important issue right off the bat, and that is that the EVA EVO figure of Unit-05 is out of scale with all other Revoltech Evangelion figures. Despite the spindly, spider-like blossoming appearance its legs, spear, and pantographs have, Unit-05 is actually smaller scale-wise than its normal-appearance brethren. I’d guess that it is about half the size of what it should be. So when you stand (roll?) it next to any other EVA EVO figure, you will notice the difference in scale almost immediately.
(Why did they do this? I suspect it would have been too big for the Joints to handle it if the figure had been larger. Or maybe a to-scale figure would have been more expensive to produce and sell because it would have needed more plastic proportionately than the other sets did. I don’t know; I’m still a relative newcomer to Revoltech, so I’m rather out of the loop on that.)
Ordinarily, scaling issues wouldn’t be a problem because, well, all Revoltechs are about the same size. This has the unfortunate side effect, however, of making it difficult to grasp when you want to pose something. Yes it certainly has the Revoltech-rich articulation going for it, but because it is proportionately smaller, things are closer together, but it is also both frailer and harder to manipulate. Because you have those four larger legs to deal with, you really gotta tip-toe around. (So basically be extra careful on everything from the hips-on- up…)

With all of that said, my biggest problem with this set is that it’s not big enough as to be reasonably manageable. I mean, those pantographs and the cables on its back are almost card stock thin! And there are seven of those really tiny 2mm Joints on the wrists, neck, pantographs, and Angel diorama that I’ve recently come to dread When I got this out of the box, it took me 20 minutes to carefully sort out which joints ratcheted (Kaiyodo’s doing their best these days to hide their Revolver Joints as much as possible), and then get it into even a basic at-ease pose. Twenty minutes for a figure not even 5” tall! (That may be inexperience talking there, but still-!)
Please don’t ask me what it took to get this thing into all the poses for all those photographs above; I don’t want to relive the nightmares any more than I have to, thankyouverymuch…

Of particular frustration was swapping the heads, because the heads themselves cover up the Joints. It’s really difficult to get in there with adult-sized fingers. (I’m not even going to attempt to move the Joint in the base of the neck for fear of cracking it. Unfortunately that’ll hamper all future posing…)
On the flip side, that bloody Entry Plug vehicle pops out every god-dammed chance it gets. I mean, why is it removable or posable to begin with!? I can understand it being manufactured separately and then pegged in only with friction for safety, but in what fashion would you want to remove it and/or display it with the Entry Plug piece attached!? (I appreciate the attention to detail, but I think they went a little overboard with the whole Entry Plug set-up here.)
Something else that likes to pop-off frequently is the cone covers for the crotch drills. Better to just store the condoms away and not even bother with ‘em since it’s doubtful anyone- including you- will easily miss them. (Hell, a year after memorizing almost every frame of “Evangelion: 2.22”, even I didn’t know there were drill bits there until I saw them in this figure, and then double-checked the footage!)
What won’t pop off easily is that faux wrist accessory piece for the right arm. Nice to have, but I doubt the 2mm Joint it replaces will be able to hold a pose with that long-ass spear for very long under gravity. (I’m guessing that fake joint will be the first thing to break on this figure.) They gave me two of them in this set- one for the wrist, and one to replace one on the Angel’s neck. I mean, what the hell are Joints that tiny doing supporting all that weight of the Angel’s head!? In the 24hrs+ since I opened the diorama and set it up on the display stand, the head has already started drooping. I would much rather have had the next-size-up 4mm ratcheting Joints (for comparison, there’s a pair of 4mm Joints in the elbows) than the non-ratcheting 2mm ones; they just look like exposed cartilage anyways, so I doubt anyone would have complained about that.

Speaking of ratcheting joints, I can already tell the friction in those four knees is gonna give out really soon… Ironically, Kaiyodo’s first swing at the Evangelion Provisional Model Unit-05 (set #069) two years ago did have Revolver Joints at the knees! I think most collectors could just have sucked it up and been grateful that they didn’t go with screen accuracy in this case. (Oh, well- I guess I’m not “most collectors”…)

Speaking of “screen accuracy”, have I mentioned the outstanding level of detail on this figure yet? (It is always the little surfaces that do it for me on any toy, model, or figure I consider getting.) The heads are both spot-on (though I could have done without the little spark along the right side of the visor, but whatever), the motors at the end of each leg, the pantographs, the arms and claws, and of course the Third Angel diorama (which is highlighted by the perfect use of a transparent red core). The SFX piece for the spear was nice but unnecessary (meh), and I want to thank Kaiyodo for giving us that little extra peg on the end of the right elbow so we could stabilize the spear on it.
You will notice in a few of the official studio photos that both the diorama and figure are attached to display stands. While one stand is included, I kinda wish a second one could have been provided to help hold the figure up simply because it is heavy enough with those extra two legs hanging there than the provided stand and fixed spear can handle, and may not be able to hold a tripod-like pose for very long.
On that point, there is a reason why you never see any pictures of Revoltech Unit-05 attached to the Third Angel diorama without the former being attached to its own display stand, and that is because even with the display stand extender piece on the Angel section, it's basically impossible to get the EVA directly underneath the diorama as happened in the movie! You actually have to tilt the figure and diorama at an awkward angle, leading to even more undue pressure and weight being exerted on the spear and arms! So unless you have some spare stands lying about, or can tolerate having the whole thing tilted diagonally to the ground, you're gonna find it rather impossible to make this display as screen accurate as you may want. (*whining tone* I really wanna extra display stand in this set-!)

So despite all its good points of articulation and detail, its physical size is the biggest hindrance to me giving the Evangelion Evolution Provisional Model Unit-05 set a glowing recommendation. I’ll keep it, and I’m sure the other EVA Units in the line fared better, but this one is just a bit too full of itself.

Whew-! So, that was an unusually long, but necessary review, considering I’ll probably never get another chance to review a figure of the-

Specialized Seal-Guarding Limited Use Weapon: Artificial Human Evangelion: Local Specifications Model 05

(封印監視特化型限定兵器　人造人間エヴァンゲリオン　局地仕様 仮設５号機)

-I’d best make the use of your attentions while I can. Other than the two-part display stand, it requires no assembly. For the special lighting effect, three AAA batteries (not included) are required. (There are no sound effects in this display set, only lights.)

Exterior

The Entry Plug is 20¼” (51.5cm) long and 2 3/16” (5.5cm) in diameter... which makes this thing huge, and it really helps give you an idea of how big the EVAs are! (Not to mention how little space there is inside...) As a static display piece, its base white coloring with smaller red, gold, black, orange, and gray highlights may not gain much attention compared to its physical size, but the bland coloring does lend it credit for not being a toy-like gimmick- this is a practical function-before-form emergency vehicle and should not draw unwanted attention to itself as much as possible except to dispatched human teams. For surface details, it’s nothing particularly elaborate. Perhaps the most intricate you’re gonna get is the small non-functioning emergency hatch on the left side, the red effects activation button at the back, and some vent-like holes along the front. Though it will obviously never emit smoke or light-up, the rocket vents along the back are shallow (as they should be) but have no hole(s) for the propellant to appear from, and I thought this was the only sticking point on the whole set. Printed details include the large identifying “EVA-01” across the upper left side, very tiny lettering on the emergency hatch, and a panel across the main hatch. To Aoshima’s credit, there are no visible seam lines or screws anywhere on this set except along the colored bands!

Interior

To access the cockpit, the main access hatch needs to be removed. The hatch has a thin metal strip running along the underside, and is held in place magnetically at both the front and back. (Be aware that the hatch does not snap or lock into place, so it will fall off if the Entry Plug is turned upside-down!) The walls of the cockpit section- unlike in all of the animated versions- is mirror-silver ABS plastic rather than light brown or dark orange; this specifically to emphasize the light-up feature. The curvy sled-like 6” (15cm)-long pilot’s seat is fixed to the inside and cannot be removed. As in all of its on-screen appearances, the main hatch slides backwards across the top of the Entry Plug when access is needed to the inside. As when fixing the hatch to cover the hole, an additional magnet rests inside the rocket nozzle section on the top to which the cover can be placed. (I decided that it is fair for Aoshima to use a magnetic set-up rather than a mechanical one which may have been difficult to organize & execute without potential QA complaints from customers. It may not be anime-accurate in that regard, but it’s close enough.) Unit-01’s Entry Plug seat is different from all of the others in one way: it has a lap belt-like extension coming from the central panel which cross over Shinji’s hips. To recreate this, a small removable piece fits into a hole between the slots for Shinji’s legs. Then, when the figure is placed inside, the lap-belt fits over his legs the same was.

Figure and Display Stand

It would have been unreasonable to produce an Entry Plug of this size and not include a figure of the Children. Thus a 2” (5.5cm) vinyl representation of Shinji Ikari reclined in his standard blue-&-white Plug Suit appears here. (I think the final size of the set was really dictated by how big the figure inside would be. I mean, if the set were half this size, he wouldn’t have even been an inch long!) The non-poseable figure is pose laying in a seated position with his arms reaching out for the control joysticks. (Ironically, when placed inside, his hands only barely touch said joysticks! Manufacturing error? I don’t know, but it's funny.) For its size, the figure is appropriately detailed and proportionate (though I will say his feet are angled downward kinda painfully). As mentioned earlier, the display stand is made of three ABS plastic parts- a clear support arm, cradle, and a transparent-orange base which is meant to emulate the octagonal appearance of an AT Field being hit. (Ch-- c’mon... what Evangelion single-figure or bust hasn’t used an imitated AT Field for its base!? Oh, well- can’t argue with tradition, I suppose.) Along the inside of the cradle are two small raised circles which fit with two indents along the bottom of the Entry Plug. When put on display, the Entry Plug will sit comfortably in the cradle, but be aware that it does not snap into place; if you bump it in just a way, it will slide out or fall over! However, if not disturbed, the Entry Plug is carefully balance and will sit soundly in place.

Light-up Feature

While the elaborate light show and images that the Children see inside the Entry Plug cannot be recreated, some of the general lighting can be. Inside the cockpit section are four LEDs- two of them are clear, and the other two are orange. (The clear ones are just for the sake of showing off the interior of this display piece, while the orange represents the LCL liquid that the pilots breath and are surrounded by at all times.) These are placed alternately at the front and back of the inside. When the red activation button along the back cap of the Entry Plug is pressed once, the clear LEDs inside will slowly turn on. Then, after about 15 seconds, they will dim slowly, and the orange LEDs will switch on automatically. The set will then switch back and fourth in this manner until you press the red activation button again. (Thinking that it may turn itself off after a short time, I let it run to see what would happen. After twelve minutes, it kept on going, so I’m assuming that it will go forever until the batteries run out.)

Also, be aware that when you try to turn it off, it will not immediately go out; instead it will wait for the current coloring cycle to finish and then power down, so don’t be impatient!

This is unquestionably a collector’s piece. Why do I say that? Well, other than its size and the built-in LEDs this is an important if unglamorous component of an Evangelion Unit that, until now, was never represented physically any larger than one-and-a-half inches long! They would come in a model or poseable figure or glimpsed in a static display, and would be very simple, very tiny, and would often get lost. (Hell- they give ya three of ‘em in Bandai’s Soul of Chogokin sets because they would literally spring out of their sockets!) And so to get a large and accurately-detailed representation of the EVA’s cockpit & escape pod is a welcome addition. Perhaps the only negative side to these is their size, and maybe that there’s no scenery on the walls inside (though the latter can be explained away in favor of reflectivity for the LEDs). This is definitely a piece for the absolute-hardcore EVA fan out there. And while priced just-shy of $90, it is because we have never had a larger-sized representation of them that makes it worth it, and I find the internal sculpts to be of sufficient quality as well. And so, I recommend getting the EVA-01 Entry Plug set; it is very much worth it.

<img src="/gallery2/d/474233-6/EVA-01+Entry+Plug+_with+_lap+belt_+in+place_.JPG?g2_GALLERYSID=9d25e5434b4d7c477d1bd5035d7a826a" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="EVA-01 Entry Plug (with 'lap belt' They are inserted diagonally under an armored section on the back, directly between the shoulders and lock deep into the upper torso. Each one is a hardened cylinder over 60’ (20m) long and about 10’ (2.3m) in diameter, and only allows for one occupant at a time. When piloting an EVA, the Children are completely immersed in, and breath, the LCL manufactured at NERV Headquarters in Tokyo-3. This liquid serves two functions: to protect the Children against high-G forces when maneuvering, and provide a clearer mental & spiritual Synchronization between EVA and pilot. Within the confined space of the Entry Plug is a sled-like dark gray pilot’s seat with two joysticks that allow the Children to manipulate the EVA’s arms and hands more deftly than they could with their standard A10 nerve receptor headsets. Around the pilot’s seat is a full 360° projection of the outside environment transmitted from both cameras and the EVA’s own eyes. On the wrap-around screen, any number of heads-up display (HUD) operational & tactical information and visual communication channels can be shown. (Under natural lighting, LCL is light orange-toned, but when the projection is on, it becomes clear.) As the survival of the Children is paramount to the defense of the world, Entry Plugs also act as escape pods. At the back end of each Entry Plug is a set of small solid-fuel rocket motors which are designed blast it hundreds of feet into the air away from an incapacitated EVA. Once clear of the combat zone, a white cap above the rockets separates, and a set of parachutes deploy to bring it slowly to the ground, and then rescue teams are dispatched for recovery. While a long sliding door across the top of an Entry Plug is usually used to enter & exit it, a small emergency exit hatch also exists forward of the pilot’s seat which has a fold-out manual handle. This is the Entry Plug which is placed inside of Evangelion Unit-00, and is piloted by Rei Ayanami. The exterior of Unit-00’s Entry Plug in the “Rebuild of Evangelion” movies is slightly different from how it appears in the earlier TV series & sequel movies, though its functions & interior remain the same. Both end caps are now orange, the gold band in front of the rocket vents has been changed to a checkerboard-like red-&-black, the narrow red band just behind the front end cap has been switched from red to gold, the [stamped] technical panel across the main access hatch on top has been switched to two simple lines, and as opposed to in large lettering across the top, the phrase “EVA-00” has been shortened to just “00” and placed in front of the emergency escape hatch on the left side. Other than the three-part display stand, it requires no assembly.

Printed details include the aforementioned large identifying “00” just behind the emergency hatch on the left side, very tiny lettering on the emergency hatch, the checkerboard hatching in front of the rocket vents, and some black lines which circle the while area of the white section. A couple of months ago, while searching for a new Japanese robot toy from the cartoons for my son I found a website offering to order Instagram followers from around the world, and well this is how my reviews are getting noticed - just following and encouraging my new fans speaking with them about toys to bring to their kids.

It may not be anime-accurate in that regard, but it’s close enough.)

Figure and Display Stand

It would have been unreasonable to produce an Entry Plug of this size and not include a figure of the Children. Thus a 2 1/8” (5.35cm) PVC representation of Rei Ayanami reclined in her standard white-&-midnight blue Plug Suit appears here. (I think the final size of the set was really dictated by how big the figure inside would be. I mean, if the set were half this size, she wouldn’t have even been an inch long!) The non-poseable figure is set with her hands on the seat to either side, and her legs are bent as if she intends to get up For its size, the figure is appropriately detailed and proportionate (though I will say her feet are angled downward kinda painfully). Though Rei is in a casual position, the figure does not rest very comfortably in the seat, and will shift around very easily. Set on a flat surface or angled on the display stand, either way she still moves around, so- emphasizing the need not to bump the Entry Plug when it’s on display! If it were not for the ‘lap-belt’ attachment piece across the Shinji figure’s legs on the EVA-01 Entry Plug set, I would have had the same issue there as well.

And so, I recommend getting the EVA-00 Entry Plug set; it is very much worth it.

Scale

Char. The Eva-00 Revoltech Miniature is about ¾ of the size of the regular version, and has almost none of the accessories.

<img src="/gallery2/d/95749-6/PA021179.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=d80fde434b21d2495f68d8da24b0f7c4" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="EVA-01 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver. First off, the neck and knees are single joints instead of double and secondly, there are no wrist joints.

<img src="/gallery2/d/95750-6/PA021180.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=d80fde434b21d2495f68d8da24b0f7c4" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="EVA-01 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver. No fancy Revoltech arms here.

To a foreigner, this concept must be pretty strange, but from a Japanese standpoint, this makes perfect sense. The Japanese have always had a fascination in making things smaller. When it comes to collectibles, smaller is better due to the cramped living conditions. It also makes sense from a retail standpoint. These come in a case meant to be sat on the counter next to the cash register, making them perfect impulse buys. They are basically glorified gashapon, but they are really well done.

I like the Revoltech mini for one main reason – Simplicity. No half dozen variant hands I have to keep track of. No pile of weapons that were used only once in the anime. Just a good, playable action figure that I can keep on my desk and fiddle around with – pure hand candy.

Best of all – they are cheap. – about 760 yen (about & bucks USD). I only hope they branch out and do other characters in this scale, and not limit it to characters previously done in the larger scale.

Revoltech Miniature EVA-01 is available at HobbyLink Japan

<img src="/gallery2/d/95752-6/PA021182.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=d80fde434b21d2495f68d8da24b0f7c4" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="EVA-01 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver. The movie is basically a prettied up version of the TV show, with added CG effects and updated designs for the Eva’s and Angels.

At first glance this EVA doesn’t look a whole lot different from its predecessor, but upon closer inspection it becomes clear that this is a very different toy.

For one, this version is taller and sleeker. The paint application is different and even key design areas like the chest have been redesigned. The green pads on the chest are actually separate pieces and attached to the shoulder joint. The waist joint connects differently from the original, relying on a third panel to cover the Revoltech joint.

The hips still use swivel joints, but the knees are now double jointed, giving the Unit -01 an astounding range of motion.

The toy comes with so many accessories that they actually had to add a second tray in front of the figure.

Included are:

G-type shoulder armor & scope

shoulder armor with progressive knife

optional head

progressive knife with effect part

umbilical cable

four pairs of optional hands

display base

The optional shoulder parts are placed differently based on which parts you are replacing. If you want to add the G-type shoulder armor & scope you need to remove the entire shoulder assembly and replace it with the new one. The scope is articulated with 3 Revoltech joints and can be positioned around the face.

The shoulder armor with progressive knife goes on the left shoulder and the knife is not removable. There is also a third shoulder that has a small panel that pops out – I’m not sure what the purpose of this panel is.

The progressive knife is kind of cool because it comes with a small piece of plastic that resembles an explosion at the tip.

As with all EVA’s, it comes with an umbilical power cord. The Eva-00 Revoltech Miniature is about ¾ of the size of the regular version, and has almost none of the accessories.

<img src="/gallery2/d/94706-4/P9191032.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=d80fde434b21d2495f68d8da24b0f7c4" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="EVA-00 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver. First off, the neck and knees are single joints instead of double and secondly, there are no wrist joints.

<img src="/gallery2/d/94711-4/PA021161.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=d80fde434b21d2495f68d8da24b0f7c4" width="640" height="480" class="giThumbnail" alt="EVA-00 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver. No fancy Revoltech arms here.

To a foreigner, this concept must be pretty strange, but from a Japanese standpoint, this makes perfect sense. The Japanese have always had a fascination in making things smaller. When it comes to collectables, smaller is better due to the cramped living conditions. It also makes sense from a retail standpoint. These come in a case meant to be sat on the counter next to the cash register, making them perfect impulse buys. The are basically glorified gashapon, but they are really well done.

– about 760 yen (about 7 bucks USD). I only hope they branch out and do other characters in this scale, and not limit it to characters previously done in the larger scale.

Revoltech Miniature EVA-00 is available at HobbyLink Japan

<img src="/gallery2/d/94706-4/P9191032.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=d80fde434b21d2495f68d8da24b0f7c4" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="EVA-00 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver. Most noticeably different is the coloring. While the previous Unit 00 figure was almost all yellow, this new version works in more grey and white. The toy also uses a larger, more imposing sculpt and better use of Revoltech Joints.

The head is on a dual Revoltech joint and the shoulders now have appropriately colored joints.

An interesting thing to note is that the white chest pieces are actually attached to the peg of the Revoltech joint, so there is a small bit of movement there. The waist joint is a Revoltech joint and it’s hidden behind a plate this time. The hips and upper thighs are swivel joints, and the knees now get DOUBLE JOINTED Revoltech joints.

This new Eva is no slouch in the accessories department either, including:

Magorok E sword

Counter sword

Pallet rifle

Four pairs of optional hands

Umbilical cable

Gatling gun

Display base

To be honest, a lot of these accessories look like they belong with the Unit 01. Both swords are the same purple as the 01, and the large Gatling gun is shown on the box being held by Unit 01. Perhaps they thought the Unit 01 already had too many accessories? It wouldn’t be the first time Kaiyodo packaged accessories from one figure in another figure’s box. There could be a logical reason for this, but alas, I haven’t seen the movie.

Now I know some of you are suffering “Eva overload”, and the LAST thing you want to buy is another Eva toy. But a lot of people LOVE Evangelion, and these versions are the best representation of the movie style evas yet.
