He's a Henshin Hero based on a grasshopper that kicks rampaging robots real hard.

And you know what? It's good, too. Like, really good. Not only is the production team taking the show very seriously, but they are using this chance to break new ground and try more experimental filming techniques. Rather than sticking with the tried and true "drone shot while 2 stuntmen perform simple 1-2 choreography" and "shutter action for days", we suddenly got "hero jumps through a bus, spins around in slow motion, hits a button and flies out the other side while it explodes" and "another hero jumps across shipping containers dodging boomerangs and shooting lasers while the camera flies around and under his legs".

They even gave us an AKIRA SLIDE.

But enough with my praise for the show. Let's look at the one staple that every Kamen Rider series can't be without: the transformation belt.

The DX Hiden Zero-One Driver (branded "Hiden" after the fictional company that created it) has many features of Rider Belts that came before. You'll need to slap the slidey bit onto the front of the Driver before you can really start playing.

It also comes with belt straps perfectly sized for a 6-year old Japanese child.

And, of course, you can't have a modern Kamen Rider toy without a gimmick item! Inside the box, you get the Rising Hopper Progrise Key: the key that unlocks Kamen Rider Zero-One's transformation and initial power set.

Flipping the key out is really satisfying, and has a wonderful *click* that will send chills down your spine.

It also has a button for making sounds like "JUMP!" and "GRASSHOPPER'S ABILITY". Actually, those are the only two sounds. But still, it's really fun to play with and I can't wait to spend all my money on more.

Gaze into the abyss. You'll know you've done it correctly when the Driver tells you that you are authorised.

Step 5: OPEN THAT KEY LIKE A BOSS WHEN THE MUSIC STARTS.

Step 6: Penetration.

Step 7: A JUMP TO THE SKY TURNS TO A RIDER KICK

Step 8: When you are ready to blast the Monster of the Week to shreds, smack the side of the Key and get ready for a RISING IMPACT!

And you're done.

You can also try inserting the key without authorising it first, but the belt will admonish you with "ERROR RISE!" and you'll only get the lame secondary key sound. The Omakase Box from Viewster seems to be a new bimonthly subscription service at a more premium price focusing on specific anime series’ for each box instead of a random merchandise each month. At 35 dollars after shipping (29+6), the boxes are quite a bit more than subscriptions like Loot Crate and Nerd Block but Omakase box also claims to have a value of over $60. Viewster itself seems to be a Swiss company that runs an online streaming service similar to Hulu featuring original content and some licensed Anime.

I’ll be upfront and state that I am not particularly fond of the subscription box concept. The majority of the boxes all seem to contain a bunch of random crap stores couldn’t give away if they wanted to, a Funko Pop and T-shirt I would never wear. While nicely made, this is actually one of the things I was least interested in. I’m generally not a fan of manga adaptations, and KLK features very animated characters that probably don’t translate into comic form too well. I’m also a huge fan of Sushio’s art style and the manga does not follow his awesome style.

The Guts pin is just your standard tiny little button pin. It’s neat, but I’m old enough and/or my clothing/baggage is expensive enough that I don’t want to poke holes in them. It’s neat but I will probably never open it.

The sweatband is just a standard white wrist band with the 3 star uniform logo printed on it. The scarf itself is gigantic, maybe 6ft long and features Senketsu’s eye in one corner. I’m not much of a scarf wearer but I really love this and will probably use it to wrap my camera in my bag.

The other item I was most excited for in the box is the large Mako bath towel. The towel features a large monochrome image of Mako doing her Ryuko impression with the single red strand of hair in color.

At 29 dollars per box and 35 after shipping, the Omakase box is really expensive. While the items are a lot nicer than what you would find in your generic nerdy subscription service (thank god there is no KLK Pop Vinyl) I’m still not convinced the 5 items are really worth almost 35 dollars. I do really love KLK so I went in knowing I was paying so much for just two items but more casual fans may feel the subscription is not quite worth the price.

I do feel the need to mention that while I do not have any major issues with the Omakase box itself, Viewster as a company has disappointed me greatly. They are a new company, and the KLK box is technically their first box (they had Hatsune Miku test box sent to online reviewers) so they might deserve some slack, but the way the company has handled many things makes them feel very unprofessional and amateurish. The site itself has some pretty terrible coding and I was not able to even check out and pay for it in Google Chrome. I ended up having to do it in Internet Explorer, but my subscription would not even show up in my account until deleting my cookies in Chrome. In fact, after rebooting my computer, my subscription disappeared from my account again forcing me to delete the cookies again to show. Trying to cancel my subscription has also been an ordeal, and I actually haven’t even been able to cancel yet. Repeated attempts to hit the cancellation button have resulted in no results and I am still waiting for my support ticket to be reviewed.

The biggest issue I have with Viewster doesn’t actually affect me, but seems like a total slap in the face while simultaneously being kicked in the balls. The deadline to order the KLK box was Monday, November 23rd. After this date, the KLK box was supposed to no longer be available but two days later on the 25th, Viewster offered a Black Friday promotion that gave new customers the KLK box and the following box (Naruto) for 40 dollars. Previous customers were not given an option to be prorated or offered this deal, and really seems like Viewster is giving existing customers the finger. Had the company just offered the Naruto box and the one afterwards for the 40 dollar promotional price would have been fine, but giving a deadline to order an item that would supposedly no longer be available and then offering it for almost 50% off two days later seems like a terrible way to retain any loyal customers. Viewster did try to alleviate the situation by giving existing customers a 6 month subscription to Shonen Jump online, but they also gave it to all customers of the Black Friday deal so it really didn’t feel like it accomplished much. I only bought the box for KLK and had no plans of ever purchasing future boxes anyways, but the principle of the matter means I cannot recommend the service to anyone else. While the product they offer isn’t bad, the incredibly poor decisions by the company have left a rather negative impact. I know it’s a bit of a rant, but it deserves being mentioned.

Scale

Char. The right arm simply flips up slightly while the left one rotates up 180 degrees. Pressing the buttons on both sides of Aoi-tan allows the blade to fold up and the back connector folds down into a vertical position. The colorful hair on the blade is really gorgeous and a trigger on the back plays sounds. Unfortunately I didn’t have any spare batteries to test out the function.

Munyu Munyu Zuuban is definitely not for everyone. In fact, the original retail price and rather unique nature of the Aoi-tan probably put off many potential customers. If you can get past all this, it is a really cool display piece and one of the few affordable 1:1 scale accurate replicas on the market. It’s probably not something I’ll keep out when company is over…but I don’t regret owning one. Now what was interesting was that I have not been to Coimicon, in 20 years, since 1994! It was somewhat of a personal and reflective trip to Comicon as it was sometime my dad, who recently passed away, and I used to go to when I was younger. But it was nice to have some new memories and meeting up with some old friends and meet new ones.

So what was the purpose of this hasty trip down to San Diego? Tom told me I was the only friend of his that was on the Star Trek: Axanar Facebook Page and he thought I would not only enjoy watching Prelude To Axanar but I could assist him with some of his interviews with the cast and crew for the website. Then it all came back to me, I had added the Facebook page for Star Trek: Axanar a while back and had not kept up with the latest progress of this Star Trek fan project. It turns out Saturday night was going to be the release of Prelude to Axanar a Kickstarter promo reel for Star Trek: Axanar.

On Saturday night Tom and myself were treated to a VIP red carpet screening of Prelude to Axanar. Prelude to Axanar is the retelling of the background events that lead up to the historic Battle of Axanar as told like a History Channel documentary with the participants of the Battle describing their involvement. Axanar was a key moment in Star Trek lore as it was after the battle that set the tone for Star Trek: The Original Series’ Klingon/Federation stalemate. The direct connection to ST:TOS is the episode Whom God’s Destroy as Captain Garth of Izar is the hero of The Battle of Axanar. The History Channel type documentary was not only cleverly produced but it was an excellent way to get a trailer up for their fund raising efforts on Kickstarter.

Afterwards, I met up with the director, screenwriter and some other key personal for Prelude to Axanar and I can tell you I felt sincerity from everyone involved for the Axanar project. They are extremely dedicated to showing a rather unknown but important story in Star Trek lore that has been long neglected by the owners of the property.

At the time I watched the trailer there wasn’t a lot merchandise for ST:A but they did have one item that caught my eye on the fundraising table that was a must own and that was the crew patch for USS Ares, the lead Star Fleet ship of the Battle of Axanar, Commanded by Captain Garth of Izar.

This USS Ares patch was the same one used by the crew In ST:A and beautifully embroidered with gold colored thread throughout. As you can see it was beautifully modeled by some USS Ares crew.

I really enjoy items like this, something a little different from the usual Star Trek offering and a unique display item for your display case or jacket that helps raise money for a good and sincere cause. With most of the money raised I am looking forward to seeing the completed Star Trek: Axanar film to be released later this year. As for the patch I would suggest picking one up right away before they are sold out to other enthusiastic fans.

?2015 pictures and article by Leonardo Flores & CollectionDX

Scale

1:1

Char. The Moon Stick is the weapon that she uses to vanquish the evil Queen Beryl. Those who watched the U.S. dub of Sailor Moon may remember this weapon as the Crescent Moon Wand.

Although other versions of the Moon Stick have been released, Bandai recently released what they are touting as the most accurate version of this iconic weapon. Bandai’s new Moon Stick is a 1:1 scale prop replica, hence the “Proplica” moniker for this new line.

The Moon Stick is a weapon with a simple design. The previous toy versions of the Moon Stick, which were released a while back, took some liberties with the design in order to make it look more ornate. But this time around the name of the game is show accuracy and the Proplica Moon Stick does a good job at capturing what this weapon looks like in the anime. I think the only thing that would have made this more screen accurate is if the Moon Stick had a longer handle.

In the Sailor Moon series, the Moon Stick was upgraded with the addition of the Silver Crystal. The Proplica Moon Stick includes a Silver Crystal, which can be attached onto the Moon Stick by removing a circular cover piece inside of the moon crescent. You remove this piece by pressing the buttons that are concealed at the base of the crescent moon.

That buttons for releasing the golden cover/ Silver Crystal are not the only functional parts of this toy that are concealed for maximum show accuracy.

The battery compartment is also nicely hidden on the body of the Moon Stick.

Also, the speaker for this Moon Stick is better hidden than the previous iterations of Sailor Moon’s iconic weapon.

See the speaker compartment? No?

The circle in the back of the Moon Stick is actually a gap betwen the two pieces of plastic. This gap allows the sounds to escape the toy. It also keeps the back of the Moon Stick from having large and noticeable holes for the speakers. The previous versions of the Moon Stick, being toys and all, went that route and tried to incorporate the holes into the design by making them into star patterns.

The “on/off” switch actually the chrome piece at the bottom of the moon stick. It has three settings: star mode, off and moon mode.

The Moon Stick features 4LEDs that light up when you press the star button on the handle. There are 3 LEDs inside the golden crest.

There is also a color-changing LED inside of the Silver Crystal. I had to turn off the lights in my photo setup because they overpower the LED in the Silver Crystal. In normal lighting conditions, however, there is no issue with seeing the light from the LED inside of the Silver Crystal.

The Moon Stick features 8 different sounds, which are produced by using different combinations of the “moon” and “star” settings on the wand, pressing or holding the star button and using the wand with or without the Silver Crystal. Check out my video review to listen in on the sounds of the Moon Stick and also check out the LED lights!

The Moon Stick also comes with a stand so that you can proudly display your Proplica for the world to see.

The base of the stand has an indentation in it. You can place either the chrome cover for the crescent or the Silver Crystal on this part of the base.

The stand's design takes into consideration that sounds for the Moon Stick come out of the rear of the toy. There is a circular cutout at the back of the stand, so that you can still listen to the sounds effects of the Moon Stick while it rests in the stand.

Also included is a pretty sweet flower-themed display piece to insert the Silver Crystal into.

The Moon Stick is a very smartly designed prop replica, which gives us a very faithful rendition of Sailor Moon’s iconic weapon. Unfortunately I was not collecting toys in the 1990’s and I was just content with admiring Star Trek toys in the toy aisles at Target and Toys R Us.

Fortunately my friend, Nathan Wilson from Rhino Records Claremont, knew I was a huge 1960’s Star Trek fan, especially of the more obscure Christopher Pike character, and picked up this Playmates Captain Pikes Starfleet Laser Pistol for me for Christmas. It was great to add this wonderful and unique Laser Pistol to my American Sci-fi collection.

Although it was a very simplistic release, Captain Pikes Starfleet Laser Pistol is a solid and fun toy pistol. Made with sturdy plastic, it has a good weight and balance to it. The sculpt of the pistol is well produced, the gold and silver paint application capturing the classic look and era of the original prop.

There are only two features associated with this relaese. One is a flip up sight that flips out on the back, simple yet effective, just use one’s nail to flip it out of the recess on the top of the toy.

The second is a battery-operated light up tip and a dual sound effect. To change the sound effects just simply twisted the silver end of the pistol to either direction. Just pull the long trigger to activate the sounds and lights.

Solid enough for kid play but unique enough for serious Star Trek Collectors, Captain Pikes Starfleet Laser Pistol covers both groups very well. Although not as recognizable or iconic as the Star Trek Phaser, the Captain Pikes Starfleet Laser Pistol is a must own for the 1/1 scale Cospla Star Trek collection or if you are a fan of 1960’s retro Star Trek. Thanks again Nathan for hooking me up with this all those years ago.

?2013 Review and Pictures by Leonardo Flores and CollectionDX

Scale

1:1

Char. This device allows this motley crew of misfits to become the Akibarangers.
With just about every entry in the proper Super Sentai series, Bandai has released various toys from the series including: the henshin (transformation) device, the communicator, and weapons for the series. Akibaranger, although not a numbered entry into the franchise, also saw the release of the amalgam henshin/weapon/ communicator device from the series, which is the Moe Moe Z-cune.

Moe Moe Z-cune is a 1/1 scale toy (it says so on the box).

MMZ comes packaged in gun form. It also comes with two stands to help display the gun. In gun form, the MoeMoe Z-cune acts as the Akibaranger's main weapon.

This toy has a nice weight to it. My first thought when I took the MMZ out of its plastic trays was, “Man this thing has got some weight to it. I reckon that I could pistol-whip somebody pretty good with this thing, granted it would completely ruin the paint job on the gun."

Thanks to an awesome paint job, this gun looks great from the sides, front, and back! It looks pretty much as it does in the Akibaranger series. I have always felt that this gun, with its sleek and slightly ornate design, belongs in a Bayonetta video game.

The trigger of the gun makes a transformation sounds when it is pressed for the first time after turning the toy on. After that it makes a firing sound until the gun is turned off and tuned back on again, in which case it will make the transformation sounds once again.

The other sounds that are made by pressing the trigger require pressing and holding down the button on the rear of the gun first to create a charge-up sound that is released when the trigger is pressed..

The rear button also makes the "incoming call" sound when pressed, but not held.

Check out the video review at the bottom of the page to listen in on the sounds of this figure!

The back of the grip also incorporates the on/off switch into the design of the gun by having multiple tabs on this part of the gun to conceal the switch, which is the lowermost tab.

Towards the bottom of the grip is a gold cylinder with red top, which the speaker for this toy.

The black part of the gun's grip cleverly conceals the battery comparment for this gun, which is opened up by pressing the screw on the lower end, which unlucks the battery cover. All of the aformetnioned touches are a great step forward to making this a screen accurate toy, since there are no blatant on/off button with clearly labeled wording or symbols printed on the gun.

Unfortunately, from the top and bottom of the gun the seams are quite visible and detract from the look of the gun. I realize, however, that this is a necessary evil, as the gun has to transform into its other form.

The top, however, does not clasp shut all the way, leaving a bigger gap that I woud like.

Now it is my understanding that some of the CDX readers will probably not enjoy the other form of this toy. So contiue on if you want to check out some moe goodness!

The transformation between gun and figure form is pretty straightforward. Pop open the side panels of the gun. Pop up the barrel of the leg gun to make the feet the same size. Extend the other left leg out. Turn the hand around so it faces in forward and DONE!

The back of the box shows these simple instructions, although going from figure to gun form. This is how the process is show in the series as the Akibarangers begin with the MMZ in figure form, point the item forward, then yell " Juu Mosou" as they pull the trigger of the gun, which makes the shell of the MMZ cover the figure. Thus, converting the MMZ into the gun form. Unlike some of the other Super Sentai toys, which have features that allow the transformation device to change, this one requires the transformation to be done manually. This is a little disspointing, since it would have been cool to have a spring-loaded MMZ that transformed into the gun at the pull of the trigger. I can see why Bandai did not include this feature on this particular toy, as it would probably result in a lot scraping of the paint.

In figure form, the MMZ also functions as a communication device. As mentioned earlier, the button on the back of the gun, in this case the top of the head, is the button that elicits the transmission sounds. The sounds are not specific to the form, so the transmission noise can be made in either gun or figure form. It seems weird to be communicating through a gun (not that talking to a Moe figure is much better, I suppose).
Aoi-tan is beautifully painted in all of her moe glory. I personally do not like the genre of anime that she represents, but I can truly appreciate a piece with a gorgeous paint app.

For some reason I really dug the translucent crytal that is embedded into Aoi-tans left leg. It just goes to show how much thought and care Bandai put into recreating this figure.

Now, the fit of the gun’s shell and the Aoi-tan figure inside is very close. As such, my figure has traded some paint with the gun.I suspect that I will not be transforming this toy very often, to preserve the paint as best I can.

There is some articulation with the Aoi-tan. The head moves thanks to a nice, clicky ratchet joint. The sight/arm also moves around about 320 degrees, which needs to face forward in order to allow the head to be moved. As mentioned earlier, the left leg can move toward and away from the othe leg when needed for the transforamtion process. The left hand can also rotate 360 degrees at the wrist which is required for transforming the Moe Moe Z-cune. In gun form, hand is stored with the back of the hand facing the figures leg, which makes it look like she broke it in a crazy accident.

As a bonus, the the base of star-shaped stand that was used to prop up this toy in gun form also serves as stand for Aoi-tan. The leg that is composed of the barrel of the gun simply pop into the peg on the stand.

The Moe Moe Z-cune is a great adult/collectible role-play toy from a great, unique and quirky series. It is interesting to see Bandai test the waters in the adult collector's market by releasing a Super Sentai transformation device. If you love Akibaranger or weapons that transform into cute Moe girls, then you cannot go wrong with this aweseome figure from Bandai. The functionality of the sounds and the great design of this toy make it a pretty darn good replica /cosplay prop. Is there a Nobuo Akagi cosplay in my future? Could be!

Check out the video review if you would like to listen in on the sounds that this toy makes.

Scale

Char. It is not a decision to be taken lightly, since a good Super Sentai(or Power Rangers if that is the flavor you like) costume can run around a thousand dollars. I decided that buy the costume piece by piece, starting with the helmet, one of the most expensive parts of the costume. After many months of debating over what character I wanted to pursue, I settled on Shinken Red from Shinkenger. The Samurai Sentai Shinkenger entry in the Super Sentai Series holds a special place in my heart, because it was the series that opened me up to not only Super Sentai, but also Tokusatsu. I chose Red, not because he was my favorite character, but because out of the Shinkenger cast his costume is the one that is the most widely produced by costume and prop makers; thus easier to get ahold of and easier on my wallet.

About a week ago, I got back from my vacation in New York, and to my surprise, there was a big DHL package from Indonesia waiting for me. I opened it up and there was the Shinken Red Helmet that I had ordered a while back. This helmet is freakin’ gorgeous. The maker, Aniki, did a great job with helmet. It is made of a sturdy fiberglass, which is beautifully painted in red and the design is pretty faithful to the show.

The helmet even has the breathing holes on the black lines on the side of the helmet.

The only part of the helmet that I found bucks the trend of show accuracy are the clasps on the lower part of the helmet to hold the helmet shut.

There is black padding inside the helmet to make wearing it a bit more comfortable.

The view from the visor is pretty clear and easy to look through.

That is as far as I got to experience the helmet because it did not fit. The fit is a little snug from my chin to the top of my head, which was a little inconvenient. However, the helmet proved to be too small from my nose to the back of my head, which was a lot inconvenient. I should have known that something was up when the hood that Aniki included seemed a bit too snug on my head.

I had heard that Aniki's Megaranger helmets were pretty small, so even before buying my helmet; I had my concerns about its fit. I had contacted Aniki prior to deciding on a helmet, about the sizes of the various helmets that I was interested in. Ironically, the dimensions he provided made me slightly concerned that the Shinken Red helmet would not fit because I thought would be too short (from chin to the top of the head) or a tight fit, which it was. However, as I stated earlier, the problem with the helmet’s fit were the dimensions from front to back of the head, which according to my conversations with him should have had ample room.

So as I found out, Aniki does some really good work with his helmets. Unfortunately, his communication is another story. Not only were his measurement inaccurate, but there was absolutely no responses to my inquiries after he began working on my helmet. I had contacted him three times about providing a sample of the color that he was going to use for the helmet, along with the helmet. This way I could match the color to fabric that would be used for the suit. In good faith, I thought he must have been busy and did not have time to reply to my messages, but he must have read at least one of them and would surely include a sample with my helmet…. no such luck. There was no color sample when the helmet was delivered, which matters little anymore since the helmet did not fit; thus ending my aspiration of putting together a Super Sentai costume. On the positive side, I now have $300 Shinken Red paperweight.

Scale

Char.
